Circa 1885: Between partnerships with William T. Williams, Civil War veteran Thomas F. Reppert ran the Greensboro stoneware manufactory as a sole proprieter from 1884 to 1890. This handsome nearly 14" tall two gallon jug with both freehand and stencil decoration has incredible dark blue cobalt against a desirable light gray colored clay, making it probable that this jug is from the company's early days before Reppert (and then Williams and Reppert) began using an inferior clay and coal firing their kiln, which gave their later offerings a dark brown coloration. Finding highly decorated examples of Reppert's wares with excellent contrast has proven to be a difficult endeavor, and this beautifully turned jug certainly fits the bill. Condition is excellent with typical factory firing anomalies, a few minor nicks on the rim below the spout, and no cracks or repairs.
