Reggie Meaders Double Face Jug

Circa 2000: Brother of world famous Georgia folk art potter Lanier Meaders, Reggie Meaders (1919-2009) lived to be 90 years old and is considered a master potter in his own right. This 11" tall double handled face jug is inscribed "Reggie Meaders 1-A 2000" and has two faces. Double face jugs are also referred to as Janus jugs and allude to the double faced Roman god Janus, the god of gates and doors, who is traditionally depicted with one face surveying the future and the other eyeing the past. This jug is made from red Georgia clay, and Meaders dipped it in his family's classic ash based alkaline glaze. One face has very little glaze variation, and the opposing face is mottled with the dark wood ash glaze runs, showing that the front and back sides of the jug reached slightly different temperatures inside the kiln during the firing process. The jug is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs and only typical as made firing anomalies. This is a fine and complex example of Reggie Meaders' work and shows the potter at his creative height.
