Circa 1850-1885: Examples of patriotic redware are scarce indeed, and this eye catching 11.5" Pennsylvania lead glazed redware plate features a graphic yellow slip decorated freehand flag, which, in its minimilistic striped style, obviously represents the American flag. This rare coggle-edged plate was mostly likely manufactured in the third or early fourth quarter of the 19th century, perhaps during the Civil War or the 1876 centennial, when patriotic fervor was at a fevered pitch across the nation. Condition is excellent with a minor rim chip, minimal rim wear, a tiny factory stone ping on the rim edge, an no cracks or repairs. It will be difficult to find a cleaner example of a n antique redware plate with this unusual flag decoration.
