J. M. Harper Taft-Sherman Cast Iron Still Bank

Circa 1908: Signed "By J.M. Harper Copyright 1908," this rare political still bank depicts "Peaceful Bill" Taft and "Smiling Jim" Sherman and was produced during their presidential campaign. On page 21`of their revised third edition of The Penny Bank Book (Schiffer Publishing Ltd., 2000), authors Andy and Susan Moore explain that "a mysttery man named James M. Harper designed and copyrighted a group of fifteen banks which are considered among the most beautifully executted still banks. A Chicagoan, Harper jobbed out the production of the banks to the Chicago Hardware Foundry Company in North Chicago, Illinois. The banks all bear copyright dates including the years 1902 through 1909." This 4" tall double faced still bank is in excellent original condition and retains 90% of its original japanned surface. Showcasing the 1908 Republican presidential ticket of William Taft and James Taft at their jovial best, this interesting and incredibly scarce bank is a fantastic example of early 20th century political campaign memorabilia.
