Washington Standing at His Tomb Coffee Pot

Circa 1820s: Standing 11" tall, this dark blue historical Staffordshire coffee pot produced by the English firm Enoch Wood & Sons for the American market depicts the posthumous scene of Washington Standing at His Tomb, Scroll in Hand. In the scene, the shade of George Washington, bathed in heavenly light and holding an uncurled scroll, gazes at his own grave while ships pass in the waters behind him. This ethereal scene is in keeping with the early 19th century Romantic view of death and would prove to be popular in a fledgling nation whose first President was both mourned and celebrated with a god-like reverence. This rare gooseneck coffee pot is in outstanding condition with no cracks or repairs, very minor typical wear on the spout, and a completely glazed over in the making factory chip on the base. It would be difficult to find an example of this patriotic coffee pot in finer original condition. Additionally, the pot has excellent provenance and retains labels from the Routson and the Golderg & Brown collections.
