Elephant and Three Clowns Mechanical Bank

Circa 1883: Designed by James Bowen for the J. & E. Stevens Company, the petite Elephant and Three Clowns mechanical bank measures only six inches in height and is difficult to find, like this example, with its original clowns, which afre often missing or replaced. This colorful version of the Elephant and Three Clowns features a gray elephant with a red blanket on top of a blue base. Note that P.T. Barnum's storied elephant Jumbo arrived on American shores in April of 1882 and became instantly famous. Bowen capitalized on Jumbo's popularity and had the bank designed and patented in August. By the next year, Stevens had the produced and marketed the bank. This scarce and pleasing 19th century cast iron mechanical bank has great action an is all original with no chips. cracks, or repairs.
