Cowden and Wilcox Stoneware Batter Pitcher

Circa 1863-1880: Pennsylvania batter jugs are a hot commodity in the present stoneware market, and examples produced by Harrisburg's storied firm Cowden and Wilcox lead the pack. This 8" tall signed "Cowden & Wilcox Harrisburg PA" batter jug retains its original bail handle and survives in superlative as fired condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs and only typical as made firing anomalies. The incredible dark blue cobalt oxide is thickly applied, contrasting extremely well against the salt glazed pitcher's light gray and brown speckled surface. The spout base is brushed with leafy foliage, and a large tulip adorns each side of the spout with the tab handles outlined in cobalt, giving this batter pitcher an outstanding visual appeal that pairs well with its excellent condition. Provenance: Ex Nancy Goff Collection
