Signed A&W Boughner 4 Gallon Stoneware Churn

Circa 1852-1864: The Boughners were the first potters to open shop in Greene County, Pennsylvania, and Daniel Boughner retired in the early 1850s, leaving the pottery in the hands of his sons Alexander and William, who ran the pottery together for 12 years until Alexander Boughner bought out his brother's share of the business at the end of the Civil War. Signed Boughner pieces are scarce and desirable, and their decorated churns are also hard to find, making this stamped "A & W Boughner Greensboro PA" four gallon churn a very worthwhile example of Southwestern Pennsylvania stoneware. The churn itself is handsomely decorated from top to bottom and is clearly stamped on the reverse. This piece has a few nicks around the rim, typical staining from its long use, a tight faint hairline on the bottom, and a tight hairline on the back of the churn that runs onto the bottom as photographed and does not affect its structural integrity or interfere with the outstanding cobalt decoration. This rare, fresh to the market signed Boughner churn comes from a private West Virginia estate and had been in the family for generations.
