Circa 1870s: Standing 10 3/8" tall, this handsome one gallon stoneware pitcher with classic Baltimore double clover decoration was most probably potted by Peter Herrmann. The pitcher's bulbous form gives it a great presence, and the wonderful speckled clay contrasts beautifully with the dark cobalt decoration to make this an extemely attractive example of 19th century American crockery. Furthermore, this pitcher is completely free of human damage (no chips, cracks, or repairs) and only has the typical firing anomalies that add to its handmade charm. It's hard to find good stoneware this clean, and this pitcher is sure to please.
