Antique Great Horned Owl Confidence Decoy

Circa 1st Quarter 20th Century: Owl decoys are rare and desirable, and this 18" tall (28" tall including stand) carved wooden great horned owl decoy in original paint is a stunning example of the form. This owl features applied glass eyes, beak, and "horns," and was used as a crow hunting confidence decoy, which is evidenced by its numerous shotgun pellet holes. It's interesting to note that a murder of crows will attack an owl, sometimes even killing it, if they find their enemy roosting during the day; thus, hunters use the owl to attract crows, which are considered a menace in rural areas, and attempt to eradicate them. Found in Maine, this wonderful decoy is in excellent condition with a typical in use sealed age crack, pellet holes, and small losses to the beak and tufted horns resulting from the decoy's being hunted over.
