Rare Stoneware Presentation Loving Cup

Circa 1892: This large and unusual stoneware loving cup is marked in blue script in three areas between handles: "Fore Jim W. F. Donaldson / E.Y. Davis / Jamestown" … "Founders Town / D.B. Birney / June XXV / July XV" … and “Kup Klub / W. L. Watson / 1890 1892." These men were wealthy residents of Philadelphia and summer residents of Jamestown, Rhode Island, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Dr. D. B. Birney, William F. Donaldson, and W. C Watson formed The Jamestown Club, a men's only social club, on June 21, 1890, which later merged with the Conanicut Yacht Club in the early 20th century. The cup is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs and was most probably potted by Richard C. Remmey or Thomas Haig in Philadelphia. It measures a stout 7.5"H x 8"W x 6.75" diameter at bottom of the base.
