Circa 1880s-1920s: This 24" x 19" seven color original paint decorated backgammon gameboard is fashioned from a 19th century maple cutting board, and the maker decided to embellish the board with opposing rooster medallions with chip carved borders and aesthetic style sgrafitto plant sprigs in their beaks and fancy sgrafitto highlighted tailfeathers. The board features a strikingly modern color pallette that is both bright and subtle, and the decorative hand carved medallions mimic the period's popular wooden butter prints, elevating a simple utilitarian object into a piece of rural folk art.
