Petite Paint Decorated Scalloped Wall Box

Circa 1880s: Measuring approximately 5"H x 5.5"W x 3"D, this delightfully petite square nailed poplar wall box features scalloped cut outs, milk glass tacks, and a fine original red paint decorated surface with an abstract naturalistic design (possibly the tree of life) made by quickly removing the paint when freshly wet. This ingenious technique makes the box appear to have a two color surface, and the milk glass tacks and profuse scalloping add depth and visual complexity to this simply constructed wall box, elevating it into a beautifully executed piece of 19th century American folk art. Condition is excellent with some minor wear to the tacks, a couple drops of stray black paint, slight wood shrinkage, and some small nicks on reverse, all commensurate with age and use.
