Stoneware Pitcher with Floral Decoration

Circa 1880s: This 11" tall one gallon stoneware pitcher with freeehand floral decoration exhibits excellent contrast with dark cobalt against light colored clay and is in excellent condition with no chip or repairs, one factory stone pop, one spot of glaze exfoliation about the size of a quarter, and a faint corw's foot on the bottom. None of these minor defects affects the decoration or the structural integrity if the pitcher. This pitcher probably has a New York origin based on the light color of the clay, the type of decoration, and the small spot of exfoliation which is typical of New York stoneware of this period. This is a handsome example of antique salt glazed stoneware in a desirable form with a type decoration that is not often seen on pitchers.
