Greene County, Indiana, T. Reed Blue Decorated Stoneware 2 Gallon Jar

Circa 1865: Prolific Northeast Ohio potter Thomas Reed showed up in Worthington, Indiana, in Greene County about 1864, and began making stoneware there. Reed threw both ovoid and straight-sided jars. The Indiana jars are harder to find than the Ohio jars because Reed's stoneware output in Greene County was far less than his Ohio production. Moreover, most collectors do not know how to tell the difference between Ohio and Indiana made Reed ovoids. First, Reed's Worthington jars seem slightly slimmer and more proportionally streamilined than their Ohio counterparts. This is illustrated in the first photograph with the Indiana 1860s jar on the left and the Ohio 1840s jar on the right. Another way to tell the difference is by Reed's stamp. Indiana Reed jars are marked with a linear T REED stamp while Ohio examples are adorned with Reed's classic curved stamp. This handsome two gallon storage jar is decorated top to bottom with a freehand four-leaved flower and additional cobalt flourishes on the front side of its handles. Condition is excellent with only minor expected flakes on the top lip of the jar. We're sure the new owner will be pleased with this great example of Civil War era Indiana stoneware.
