Tuscarawas County, Ohio, T. Reed 2 Gallon Crock with Freehand Cobalt Tulip Decoration

Circa 1840s: Thomas Reed is the most prolific and celebrated potter in Tuscarawas County, Ohio's long history, and he threw, decorated, and fired stoneware there for two decades before moving to Greene County, Indiana, around the close of the Civil War. This two gallon ovoid storage jar is decorated from top to bottom with Reed's visually dynamic signature tulip and is impressed with his classic bowed T REED stamp, which identifies it as being an Ohio made vessel. Condition is excellent on this 12.25" tall salt glazed crock with only expected in use minor flakes around the edges of the top rim. This handsome piece of mid 19th century antique Newport, Ohio, stoneware is eye catching in both form and decoration and is sure to please.
