Circa 1870s: Greensboro, Pensylvania's storied Star Pottery was owned by beothers-in-law Frank Hamilton and John Jones, who ran a highly successful stoneware enterprise for 30 years after purchasing the business from Leet Hamilton in 1866. This 11.5" tall one gallon jug with patriotic stenciled eagle was drilled for a lamp at one time (see photographs) but otherwise remains in essentially as fired condition with typical factory anomalies and no other chips, cracks, or repairs. Southwestern Pennsylvania stoneware with a patriotic theme is highly desirable, and this stenciled eagle is clear and graphic, a fine example from the historic Hamilton & Jones pottery, and it will add pop to any collection of stoneware, patriotic americana, or early American country antiques.
