5 Gallon Greensboro PA Freehand Decorated Storage Jar

Circa 1870: Standing 16.5" tall, this impressive five gallon storage jar is decorated top to bottom (there are 115 leaves alone in the central floral decoration and 22 stripes on the field) with intricate dark blue freehand decoration across its classic gray Southwestern Pennsylvania clay, epitomizing the prized blue and gray stoneware that advanced collectors crave. The outstanding salt glazed jar was most certainly thrown in Greensboro, Pennsylvania, by either Hamilton & Jones or James Hamilton & Co., the two major potteries in Greene County. This 140-year-old piece of stoneware has no chips, cracks, or repairs, remaining in essentially as fired condition with factory anomalies that include two kiln kisses and a glazed over flake on the top lip. Pennsylvania stoneware of this quality and condition is difficult to find, and this one is a visual delight.
