Attributed Upton Stuckey Blue Decorated Stoneware 2 Gallon Crock

Hard to Find Loogootee, Indiana, Stoneware

Circa 1860-1880
: Measuring 10.75" tall and 8.25" in diameter, this 2 gallon straight-sided stoneware crock with freehand cobalt decoration is attributed to Upton Stuckey's Martin County pottery in Loogootee, Indiana, which Upton Stuckey owned with his father Martin, the first potter in Martin County, for about 50 years. This scarce third quarter 19th century antique stoneware storage jar is decorated with two cobalt tornadoes, a tulipo, and the number two. Additionally, there is a 2 stamped on the side of the jar. Note that in the second photo, this handsone Indiana jar is pictured with a three gallon example from the same decorator and a signed Stucky churn. This two gallon salt glazed crock has nice dark cobalt and is in excellent condition with a short, tight, nearly invisible line coming down from the top rim.
