Lehmann Am Pol Tin Litho Windup Toy

Circa 1910-1935: This 6" long antique German tin litho windup Lehmann Am Pol No. 681 celebrates Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, who, from 1903 to 1906, was the first explorer to cross the Arctic's treacherous Northwest Passage by sea. Thus, the parasol is decorated with a map of the Arctic Circle. it is also interesting to note that the figures on this German windup are clad in animal skins. While Amundsen was on his exploration, he learned from the natives that animal skins, unlike parkas, stayed warm and dry when wet on the outside and wore them throughout the journey. When wound, the toy moves as Amundsen tips his hat and the passenger spins the umbrella. This example is excellent gently played with conditon, and the windup mechanism in working condition.
