Silvio P. Zoratti White Rearing Horse Sculpture

Circa 1976: Silvio Peter Zoratti (1896-1992) was an Italian immigrant who came to America after being released from a WWI German prisoner of war camp. He had been trained as a stone carver in Europe and settled in Ohio, where, in 1923, he took a stonemason position on the Nickel Plate Railroad and worked there until his retirement in 1961. Zoratti did a few folk art stone sculptures for himself starting in 1958, and he began working in wood after his retirement and would continue carving until the 1980s when he stopped because of failing eyesight. Zoratti completed around 300 sculptures and had them displayed outside in his garden and around his tool shed. Because the carvings were kept outside and survived the harsh northeastern Ohio winters along Lake Erie, they are often more weathered on the side that faced the oncoming winds. This 20" tall fanciful carving of a rearing white horse in orginal paint is impressed "Made by S. P. Zoratti 1976. Zoratti used the tail as the third leg to the base so that his horse would stand solidly and safely in his back yard, and the horse has survived in excellent weathered conditon as photographed. Both the mane and the tail are detqiled, but the true beauty of this piece is in the face. Zoratti used cat's eye marbles for the horse's eyes and placed them side by side to personify the horse and give it a human face. It's ears and nostril are carved out, and the lips are shaped into a compelling expression that, in conjunction with its eyes and outstretched forelegs, make the horse seem as if it is reaching out to comfort its viewer. This is a fabulous carving that showcases Zoratti's ability to capture emotion in wood.
