Hannah Davis Large Blue Wallpaper Bandbox

Circa 1840: Jaffrey, New Hampshire, native Hannah Davis (1784-1863) never married, and, by 1818, both her parents had died, leaving her to carve out a living in the rugged New England countryside. Davis built her own bandbox business from the ground up, even inventing a special band saw used to slice her hand-picked spruce wood into 1/8" thick sections, and personally produced and sold her famous boxes for some 40 years. Hannah Davis remains one of the earliest documented American businesswomen, and her story serves as a lasting testament to the independence, strength, intelligence, creativity, and pure tenacity of American women to thrive against great odds. Measuring 12.5"L x 9"W x 9"H, this spruce and pine band box is covered in blue wallpaper with white floral designs, and the inside and bottom of the box are lined with newspapers having the printed dates 1828, 1838, and 1840. The paper trade card on the bottom of the box lid reads: "WARRANTED NAILED Band-Boxes. MADE BY HANNAH DAVIS, Jaffrey, N. H." This exact style of trade card is pictured on page 10 of Lilian Baker Carlisle's Hat Boxes and Bandboxes at Shelburne Museum (The Lane Press, 1960). An old thin coat of varnish was applied to the box at one time to help preserve it, and there is paper and wood loss predominantly on the lid; however, this eye catching Hannah Davis box remains in far better than average condition than most 180-year-old band boxes and will be a delightful addition to any collection of early American antiques and folk art.
