Antique American Folk Art Hooked Rug of Two Horses

Circa First Half 20th Century: These naively done horses in a seldom used muted green color scheme give this superb 33" x 16" professionally mounted folk art hooked rug an unusually fine visual appeal reminiscent of the likes of renonwned outsider artists such as Jimmy Lee Sudduth, Bill Traylor, and Mose Tolliver. Notice that both horses are primitively outlined in matching red and black stripes (necessary so their blonde tails don't get lost in the beige and cream background) and hover just atop a thick black strip of black ground. The subtle, endearing childlike naivete of this primitive rural landscape is what lifts this truly exemplary hooked rug into the realm of utilitarian high country folk art.
