Original Girl Skipping Rope Mechanical Bank

Fresh to the Market with No Apologies

Circa 1890:¬†There are approximately 30 original Girl Skipping Rope mechanical banks known¬†today, and it is extremely rare and exciting when an undocumented example of this holy grail of mechanical banks surfaces on the open market. This bank was found on the fireplace mantel of a New York home and had been passed down through the family since its purchase in 1890. In other words, this bank has never seen the inside of an auction house or has never been passed through another collector’s hands and is an important and completely fresh to the market specimen of this truly wondrous invention. The J. & E. Stevens Company’s Girl Skipping Rope is mechanical bank designer James H. Bowen’s paramount creation. Unfortunately, the bank was extremely complicated and difficult to produce, and many of its parts cracked during the manufacturing process. This resulted in low production numbers and high production costs, making this one of the scarcest openly marketed mechanical banks.

The Girl Skipping Rope was originally produced with a cast iron rope that was painted gold, but so many of the ropes broke during the casting process that the rope’s material was changed to brass, a much more resilient substance. The fact that this example features a cast iron rope shows that it was made earlier rather than later in the bank’s production run. This bank also comes with an early key, but we are sure this is not the bank’s original key. However, the family has informed us that this key has been with the bank as long as any of them can remember. The bank itself is completely original with no chips, cracks, or repairs, has an absolutely untouched original painted surface, and works beautifully. Most of the documented examples of this superb antique American mechanical bank have apologies, and to have the chance to purchase a fresh to the market Girl Skipping Rope sans apologies is the opportunity of a lifetime for the most discerning and advanced collector.
