Important Antique Illinois Sampler Arrah Wilhite

Large 18 1/2" X 20 1/2" Size / Superb Graphic Appeal

Illinois schoolgirl samplers are exceedingly scarce, and the fine condition, large size, and superb visual appeal of this piece make it an extremely important museum worthy example of antique Illinois needlework. Arrah A. Wilhite was born in 1851 in Moultrie County, Illinois near Sullivan to parents J.B. and Martha Wilhite. Since J.B. Wilhite had died by the time the 1860 cencus was taken, it is probable that Arrah worked her sampler in the late 1850s when her father was alive. In the completion of her sampler, young Miss Wilhite has used four alphabets, two roses, a red farmhouse and tree, and a variety of border motifs, including an unusal flame stitch pattern and four strawberry vines. This spectacular example of antique American needlework will make a fine addition to even the most advanced collection of folk art , Americana, or early textiles.
