Jospeh Sewell Canaryware Teacup and Saucer Set

Romantic transfer pattern of couple taking tea

Circa 1804-1819: This lovely canary yellow matching teacup and saucer set of a well to do couple taking tea in the company of their dog is impressed Sewell on the bottom of the saucer, and this mark was used by Joseph Sewell from 1804 through 1819 at his Newcastle-upon-Tyne pottery in North East England's Northumberland County. In the 17th century, tea was introduced to Great Britain and quickly became an important economic commodity. By the beginning of the 19th century, taking tea had already become ritual in the upper classes, and, by 1840 or so, middle class citizens had adopted the tradition as well. This early 19th century transfer decorated canaryware cup and saucer champions the relaxing custom of taking tea and seems the perfect pattern for this longstanding practice that also took hold in America as is indicated by this incredible cup and saucer set that was fired in the kiln probably just after the close of the War of 1812 in England for the American market. The set is a rare find in any shape and remains in essentially as made condition with only factory anomalies and extremely minor wear to the paint on the saucer's upper rim.
